  • Track of the Dead (Su): At 5th level, the tracking abilities of the slayer become legendary. The slayer automatically succeeds at tracking any quarry which he recognizes as undead. This extends to incorporeal, flying and swimming undead.

  • Favored Enemy: Undead (+1 damage, +1 Bluff, Listen, Sense Motive, Spot, Survival)

  • Sense Undead: as per Sense Undead spell

  • Hardened Soul: the slayer has steeled himself against the unholy abilities of his foes, gaining a competence bonus equal to his slayer level to all saves against the supernatural or spell-like abilities of the undead.

  • Track: To find tracks or to follow them for 1 mile requires a successful Survival check. You must make another Survival check every time the tracks become difficult to follow.

  • Blind Fighting: You take only half the usual penalty to speed for being unable to see. Darkness and poor visibility in general reduces your speed to three-quarters normal, instead of one-half.

  • Dodge: During your action, you designate an opponent and receive a +1 dodge bonus to Armor Class against attacks from that opponent. You can select a new opponent on any action.

  • Combat Expertise: When you use the attack action or the full attack action in melee, you can take a penalty of as much as -5 on your attack roll and add the same number (+5 or less) as a dodge bonus to your Armor Class. This number may not exceed your base attack bonus. The changes to attack rolls and Armor Class last until your next action.

  • Stealthy: You get a +2 bonus on all Hide checks and Move Silently checks.

  • Improved Initiative: You get +4 bonus on Initiative checks.

Kane has a grim look about him. His clothes consist of banded armor worn under his travel worn riding leathers. He usually has about three days worth of beard on his face but prefers to be clean shaven. He has a black cloak he wears for warmth on the long cold roads and for times he wants to blend into the shadows.

History

Born the younger son of one of the few human lords of Tol Nedra, Kane from a young age was trained as a warrior. His father came to power as a servant of the Vorghol King using both ruthless cruelty and brutality to claw his way up the ladder. Kane and his older brother Coraine were taught by their father's example how to rule with an iron fist. Then one day while out hunting Kane chanced to meet a young woman named Merith. She taught him that he need not be so cruel and that there was both beauty and hope in the world. He came to love her with all his heart and planned to run away with her far from his father and Tol Nedra.

One day the Vorghol King himself, Malivare, came to visit Kane's father. At a banquet in his honor Kane overheard some of the King's entourage laughing at the sport the King had made with some peasant girl on the way, not realizing that the poor soul was his beloved Merith. That night when the King entered his father's hall at his side was a familiar young woman with fresh blood marks on her neck. It was his beloved Merith but when she looked his way there was no recognition in her eyes only a cold dead hunger.

Knowing Merith was beyond all help now, Kane knew there was only one thing he could do, get his revenge on the Vorghol King. He knew he was not strong enough to face the King that night, so he decided he would leave his father's castle that night and run off to join the fabled hunters. Men who dared to defy the rule of the Vorghol King and his evil minions. Kane's revenge would take patience and long planning but he knew that one day he would send the undead tyrant to his final grave.

However Kane's father Lord Corin was not inclined to let his youngest son simply leave. Once he had discovered Kane's disappearance men were sent out to return the wayward young man. Although they took up his trail easily enough the determined youth was able to stay once step ahead of his pursuers. Many a spot did these hunters turn up with signs of a recent and hasty departure but no young lordling. Finally, tired and hungry Kane could run no further. Knowing his pursuers were not far behind he resigned himself to defeat and vowed he would not be taken back to his father alive. Kane had decided he would rather die than be brought back to his father's keep and face a life in servitude to the Vorghol King as his father and brother did. With his last ounce of strength Kane determined to throw himself upon his own sword and as he rose to accomplish this task he heard an unexpected sound.

When he turned his head to see where the sound had come from he saw what appeared to be an old man sitting on a log. "Why do you take such drastic measures boy? Surely there must be some better solution to your problem other than taking your own life" said the old man.

Despite the odd circumstances Kane found himself telling the old man his story. As if compelled he spoke of things he had not dared utter to another soul. He then went on to warn the old man of the men who would be there soon and urged him to flee while he still could. To this the old man's only reply was to tell Kane that his name was Green Leaf and that he should come with him and he would give him food and a safe place to rest. His resolve to die forgotten for now, Kane got up and followed Green Leaf.

Kane was soon to find out that his quest had ended. For the old man Green Leaf was in fact a member of the famed and mysterious group called the Hunters. After recovering from his long days of lack of food and sleep his training soon commenced. Green Leaf was a tough but patient teacher however the young Kane proved much too impatient and tried to rush through his training. The thought of revenge burned so strongly in him that he could think of nothing else. So intent was he on returning and striking back at the Vorghol King for the wrongs he had done to him and his beloved Merith, Green Leaf saw nothing he could do but let him go. And so with barely three months of training Kane set out to seek his revenge.

Kane headed for King Malivare's palace. Fueled by his hate and the food in the travel pack Green Leaf had given him, Kane soon found himself at his destination. There all was a bustle with preparations for the King's yearly blood feast. Lords and ladies for throughout Tol Nedra had traveled here to feed at the King's table. It was said that each year at this time blood flowed through the halls of the palace.

Kane's plan was simple he would steal into Malivare's feasting hall and there secret himself. There he would lay in wait till the King and his court of jackals were drunk on blood. He would then reveal himself and drive the stake hidden in his shirt into Malivare's heart.

Fate however had something else in mind. While waiting in line to gain entrance through the gates under the guise of a servant Kane was spied and recognized by a passenger in a passing carriage. Once the guards were alerted Kane was taken to a holding cell for interrogation. Beaten and bloody and left in a cold cell for hours Kane finally looked up to see two faces he knew well. One was his older brother Coraine the other the death pale face of his beloved Merith.

"Stupid little wretch, did you think to come here to avenge your sweet little country love?", his brother sneered. "How dare you bring shame on House Corinthus by trying to enter the palace with intent to do harm to my lord King Malivare. If your attempt were not so laughable you would be dead already. You will tell us who helped you to get this far. You will tell us everything we want to know and then you will beg us to let you die."

Kane was then taken to a torture chamber and much to his brother's ire he proved to be of stronger will than had been expected. Each day Coraine would come down to oversee the torture of his brother and each time he would bring Merith as a sort of second torture. When he was near to passing out they would leave him for a time to recover before the next round should start. During these times a Urag thrall would come to cleanup, for Coraine did not wish to dirty his fine clothes with blood.

During one harsh session it was determined by Coraine that Kane would probably die before breaking and would therefore be given instead as a offering to the King at his feast to show House Corinthus' loyalty. Kane was left unconscious to await his death.

When Kane finally came to he awoke to darkness and movement. He was being carried through some sort of passage probably to his final fate he thought. If only he had heeded Green Leaf's warnings. But no, now he would die with no revenge. His body was broken and he could do no more than look up. He suddenly realized that what he first thought was a low dark ceiling was in fact overhanging trees and that he could occasionally see stars shining through. Where were they taking him he thought. He sensed more than saw that it was the tall Urag thrall that was charged with cleaning up after the torture sessions that carried him. Then it dawned on him that he was outside the castle walls. From below him he heard, "Man I know you are awake. Thragga has much hate for the blood suckers! I heard them say you were in league with the Hunters. I save you so that you may hunt my enemies. Tonight I have broken free of those who would enthrall me and I have taken you with me."

To Kane's surprise the Urag traveled far that night. When they were far enough away instead of leaving him there to his fate he proceeded to nurse him back to help all the while telling him that he would live to hunt again. During this time Kane and Thragga talked a lot. Thragga told Kane of how his people were regularly raided and taken for thralls by the Vorghol. Kane came to realize that this was not his war alone. He also came to realize that he could not fight it alone as well. When Kane was well enough he and Thragga traveled back to where Green Leaf lived. Kane begged Green Leaf to take him back and that this time he would learn what Green Leaf had to teach. And so Green Leaf did this.

Kane resumed his training with a new vigor. Then after a time Green Leaf revealed to Kane that he was known by another name as well, the Greenshadow. Only one of great power could have held a glamour for so long but that is what he had done. Finally he revealed his true self to Kane. With the glamour gone Kane beheld a Selandri who looked far much younger than the old man had, but he was truly far much older.

Of the many great secrets he held he gave freely to Kane. These things he gave in confidence and Kane swore to protect them lest they fall into the hands of the Vorghol.

Psychology

Although good hearted, Kane often comes off as cold hearted and uncaring. He has a melancholy that surrounds him. He is driven by a need for revenge and hatred for King Malivare of Tol Nedra.
